Lighting the Path Towards Sustainable Rural Development
Gramin Vikas Trust successfully implemented the Solar Street Light Project at
Bamroli Village, Taluka Detroj, District Ahmedabad, under the Corporate
Environmental Responsibility (CER) initiative of ONGC Mehsana. The project was
undertaken in response to the need for improved street lighting infrastructure in the
village and aimed at enhancing public safety, promoting renewable energy, and
improving the overall quality of life of local residents.
Bamroli is a rural village with a population of approximately 2,500–3,000 people,
where agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood. Prior to the project,
several internal roads, public spaces, and community areas lacked adequate
lighting, creating challenges for residents during night-time movement and increasing
the risk of accidents and security concerns. Women, children, elderly citizens, and
daily commuters were particularly affected by poor visibility after sunset.
To address these challenges, 80 solar street lights were installed at strategically
identified locations across the village. A detailed needs assessment was conducted
in consultation with the Gram Panchayat and local residents to identify priority areas
such as village roads, intersections, community spaces, and pedestrian pathways.
The selected locations ensured maximum coverage and benefit for the community.
The project utilized high-quality solar panels, LED luminaires, batteries, and
supporting infrastructure. Comprehensive quality checks were carried out during
procurement, installation, and commissioning stages to ensure durability, safety, and
optimal performance. Each unit was tested to verify proper functioning and reliable
operation.
The project has generated significant positive impacts for the community. Well-lit
roads and public spaces have enhanced safety and security, improved mobility
during night hours, and created a more comfortable environment for residents. The
use of solar energy has reduced dependence on conventional electricity, contributing
to environmental sustainability and lowering operational costs for the Gram
Panchayat. The initiative has also increased awareness about renewable energy
solutions and their role in rural development.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the installed systems are supported by
comprehensive warranties, including a 5-year warranty on solar lights and batteries
and a 25-year performance warranty on solar panels. Community awareness and
local participation have also been encouraged to safeguard and maintain the assets.
The successful completion of the Solar Street Light Project demonstrates the
transformative impact of sustainable infrastructure investments in rural communities.
By combining clean energy technology with community-focused development, the
project has contributed to safer streets, environmental conservation, and improved
living conditions for the residents of Bamroli Village.
